Welcome

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Juba is committed to educating scientifically literate graduates who are well-equipped to understand and apply the chemical processes of life. Through rigorous instruction, hands-on laboratory training and applied research, we prepare students for careers in health sciences, industrial biotechnology, environmental monitoring, and research.

Our Mission

To provide high-quality undergraduate education in biochemistry, foster research and innovation, and engage with industry and society so that our graduates contribute meaningfully to health, agriculture, environment and technology in South Sudan and the region.

Our Vision

To become a leading centre of excellence in biochemical sciences in East Africa—producing graduates who are scientifically skilled, ethically grounded, and ready to meet national and global challenges in chemistry of life, biotechnology and molecular science.

Core Values

  • Excellence – striving for high academic and professional standards.
  • Integrity – conducting teaching, research and laboratory practice with honesty, ethics and accountability.
  • Innovation – embracing modern methods in biochemical research, molecular biology and analytical science.
  • Relevance – aligning our programmes to national needs in health, environment, agriculture and industry.
  • Collaboration – working with faculty, industry, government agencies and international partners to deliver impact.

Academic Programme

The Department offers the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry (5 years) as part of the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences. In this programme, students study core subjects such as organic, inorganic and physical chemistry; biochemistry of macromolecules; enzymology; metabolism; molecular biology; analytical and instrumentation techniques; as well as applied modules in industrial biochemistry, environmental biochemistry and biotechnology.

Why Study With Us?

  • A specialised curriculum built to meet local and regional needs in health, biotechnology, industry and environment.
  • Practical laboratory training: students gain hands-on experience with chemical and biochemical instrumentation, assays, molecular techniques and research projects.
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences—linking with biotechnology, microbiology, food science and industrial chemistry.
  • A strong foundation for careers or further study: our graduates are well-prepared for roles in diagnostics, industrial labs, environmental monitoring, research institutions or MSc/PhD programmes.

Research & Practical Engagement

The Department is engaged in applied research and outreach with areas of interest including:

  • Metabolic and enzyme-dysfunction studies relevant to health and disease.
  • Environmental biochemistry: pollution monitoring, bioremediation, chemical analysis of soil and water.
  • Industrial biochemistry: bioprocesses, quality control and analytical services for manufacturing, food and agriculture.
  • Molecular and cellular biochemistry: bridging to biotechnology, molecular diagnostics and life-science innovation.

Careers & Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry are well-positioned for roles such as:

  • Biochemist / Analytical Chemist in healthcare, diagnostics or industrial laboratories
  • Environmental Monitoring Specialist / Bioremediation Technician
  • Research Assistant or Laboratory Manager
  • Quality Control / Assurance Specialist in manufacturing or food & beverage industries
  • Academic or postgraduate student (MSc/PhD) in biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology or related fields
