Welcome

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Juba is dedicated to educating and preparing scientifically-skilled graduates who can apply chemical knowledge to real-world challenges in South Sudan and the region. Our degree programmes integrate fundamental chemistry theory with laboratory skills, applied techniques and industrial relevance—supporting roles in materials, environment, manufacturing, health, and research sectors.

Our Mission

To provide high-quality undergraduate education in chemistry, to engage in meaningful research and innovation, and to serve the community by equipping students with analytical, practical and ethical competencies needed in scientific and industrial settings.

Our Vision

To be a recognised centre of excellence in chemical sciences education and research in East Africa—endeavouring to advance knowledge, contribute to industrial development, support sustainable practices and foster scientific leadership for the future.

Core Values

  • Excellence – striving for high standards in teaching, research, and professional conduct.
  • Integrity – promoting honesty, ethical behaviour and scientific rigor.
  • Innovation – embracing new approaches and technologies in chemical education and practice.
  • Relevance – aligning our programmes with national and regional needs for chemical expertise.
  • Collaboration – working with industry, government, and research institutions to deliver impact.

Academic Programmes

The Department currently offers the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry programme, structured to provide a five-year honours degree pathway. Students will cover foundational subjects (inorganic, organic, physical, analytical chemistry) as well as applied areas (industrial chemistry, environmental chemistry, materials, and chemical instrumentation). Practical laboratory training, research projects and industry-link components are integrated to prepare graduates for employment or postgraduate study.

Why Study with Us?

  • A curriculum tailored to the context of South Sudan and the region, addressing chemical challenges in environment, health, materials and industry.
  • Strong laboratory infrastructure and a focus on skills: analytical techniques, instrumentation, material characterisation, chemical problem-solving.
  • Multidisciplinary environment through the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences, allowing collaboration across biochemistry, biotechnology and industrial applications.
  • Opportunities for graduates to serve in industry, research institutes, quality control labs, environmental monitoring agencies and academic institutions.
  • A stepping-stone for further studies (Master’s, PhD) in chemistry or related fields, with the department fostering research collaboration and innovation.

Research & Practical Engagement

The Department engages in applied and foundational chemical research focusing on areas such as:

  • ●Environmental chemistry and pollution monitoring: addressing challenges in water, soil and air quality in South Sudan.
  • ●Industrial and materials chemistry: developing and analysing materials, manufacturing processes and optimization of chemical production.
  • ●Analytical and instrumentation chemistry: establishing capacity for chemical measurement, quality assurance and regulatory testing.
  • ●Green chemistry and sustainable processes: exploring environmentally friendly chemical processes and waste management.
  • ●Collaborative projects with industry and government bodies to translate chemical knowledge into practice and impact.

Careers & Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Chemistry are well-positioned for careers such as:

  • Analytical Chemist in laboratories (public, private or regulatory)
  • Quality Control / Assurance Specialist in manufacturing or materials industries
  • Environmental Chemist or Monitoring Officer
  • Research Assistant or Laboratory Manager
  • Materials Scientist or Technologist
  • Lecturer or academic researcher (after further study)With a growing demand for chemical expertise in industrialisation, environmental monitoring and development, our alumni contribute meaningfully to national capacity and innovation.
