Welcome

The Department of Microbiology at the University of Juba is dedicated to educating the next generation of microbiologists who will address critical challenges in health, agriculture, industry and the environment. Our programme links deep theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory experience, practical applications and field-aligned research—preparing students to understand, monitor and solve microbial problems in South Sudan and the wider East-African region.

Our Mission

To provide a high-quality undergraduate education in microbiology, foster applied research, and engage with communities and industry — thereby equipping graduates to contribute to health systems, food safety, industrial processes and environmental stewardship.

Our Vision

To become a centre of excellence in microbial sciences in East Africa—producing graduates who are scientifically skilled, ethically grounded and capable of leading innovations in microbiology, biotechnology and microbial applications.

Core Values

  • Excellence – maintaining high standards in teaching, research and professional practice.
  • Integrity – ensuring accuracy, ethics and reliability in microbial work.
  • Innovation – embracing modern methods, instrumentation and microbial technologies.
  • Relevance – aligning our curriculum and research with national priorities such as disease control, food security, water & environmental safety.
  • Collaboration – partnering with industry, laboratories, government bodies and communities to translate microbiology into impact.

Academic Programme

Our Department offers the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Microbiology (5 years) programme. The curriculum covers major areas including:

  • General & Applied Microbiology (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites)
  • Immunology & Host-Microbe Interactions
  • Environmental Microbiology & Bioremediation
  • Industrial & Food Microbiology
  • Microbial Biotechnology & Molecular Microbiology
  • Laboratory Techniques, Instrumentation and Research Project

Throughout the programme, students engage in laboratory work, field studies, internships and final-year research projects to consolidate their skills.

Why Study with Us?

  • A curriculum tailored to the real-world microbial challenges of South Sudan—disease surveillance, food & water safety, industrial processes, environmental health.
  • Strong practical training: hands-on in labs and field, giving you experience with microbial diagnostics, monitoring, bioprocesses.
  • Interdisciplinary opportunities within the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences—linking microbiology with biotechnology, biochemistry, food science and environmental applications.
  • Graduates are well-positioned for careers in clinical diagnostics, food & beverage industry, environmental monitoring, research labs, regulatory agencies or further postgraduate studies.

Research & Practical Engagement

The Department engages in applied research and outreach, including topics such as:

  • Microbial disease monitoring and control relevant to the region.
  • Food-safety and industrial microbial processes.
  • Environmental microbiology: water & soil quality, bioremediation of pollutants.
  • Use of molecular microbiology methods for diagnostics, surveillance and biotechnology applications.
  • Collaboration with stakeholders (government, NGOs, industry) to implement microbial-based solutions.

Careers & Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Microbiology are ready for roles such as:

  • Microbiologist / Microbial Analyst in clinical, food or environmental labs
  • Quality Control or Assurance Specialist in food & beverage or manufacturing industries
  • Environmental Microbiologist for water, soil and ecosystem monitoring
  • Research Assistant or Laboratory Manager
  • Bioprocess Technologist in industrial or biotech sectors
  • Candidate for postgraduate research (MSc/PhD) in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology or related fields
