Welcome

The Department of Physics at the University of Juba is dedicated to educating graduates who understand the fundamental laws of nature and their applications in technology, instrumentation, energy, environment and industry. We provide strong theoretical foundations combined with hands-on laboratory experience and applied applications to equip students for diverse scientific and technical careers.

Our Mission

To deliver high-quality undergraduate education in physics, foster applied and fundamental research and engage with industry and community to produce graduates who contribute scientifically and technically to the economy, infrastructure and environment of South Sudan and the region.

Our Vision

To be recognised as a centre of excellence in physics education and research in East Africa—preparing professionals capable of innovation, critical thinking and meaningful contributions to science, technology and sustainable development.

Core Values

  • Excellence – delivering rigorous teaching, research and professional development.
  • Integrity – promoting honesty, ethics, scientific rigour and transparency in all endeavours.
  • Innovation – embracing new technologies, experimental methods, instrumentation and applied physics.
  • Relevance – aligning our curriculum and research with national and regional scientific and technological needs.
  • Collaboration – working with industry, government, research institutions and communities to translate physics knowledge into real-world impact.

Academic Programme

The Department offers the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physics (5 years), as part of the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences. Students study core physics topics—mechanics, electromagnetism, thermal physics, quantum physics—as well as applied areas including instrumentation, electronics, materials, environmental physics and computation. Practical laboratory sessions, fieldwork, instrumentation projects and a final-year research project equip students for employment or postgraduate study.

Why Study With Us?

  • A curriculum tailored to the scientific and technological conditions of South Sudan and the East African region.
  • Strong emphasis on hands-on training in physics labs, instrumentation workshops, measurement techniques, sensors and applied projects.
  • Interdisciplinary opportunities through the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences—linking physics with electronics, instrumentation, industrial chemistry and applied sciences.
  • Graduates are prepared for careers in research, industrial instrumentation, energy systems, environmental monitoring, education and technical services.

Research & Practical Engagement

The Department engages in applied research and outreach including:

  • Applied instrumentation and measurement systems for industry and environment.
  • Materials, sensors and electronics for physics applications.
  • Environmental physics: climate, hydrology, atmospheric measurement, geophysics. For example, the department is noted in a national hydromet report.
  • Collaboration with industry, service providers, instrumentation suppliers and community stakeholders to deploy physics-based solutions.

Careers & Opportunities

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Physics are well placed for roles such as:

  • Physicist / Technical Physicist in industrial or scientific labs
  • Instrumentation Engineer or Measurement Specialist
  • Environmental Monitoring Officer or Geophysical Technician
  • Research Assistant or Postgraduate student (MSc/PhD) in physics, materials science, instrumentation
  • Educator or Lecturer in physics and related sciences
  • Technical Consultant for instrumentation, energy, environment and electronics applications
