The Department of Food Science & Technology at the University of Juba is committed to preparing food-science professionals capable of advancing food safety, processing, value-addition and nutrition for South Sudan and the regional East African market. We combine rigorous scientific knowledge with applied and hands-on training to enable our students to contribute meaningfully to food industry, public health, agriculture and community nutrition.

Academic Programme

The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food Science & Technology (5 years) as part of the School of Applied & Industrial Sciences. The curriculum encompasses key topics such as:

  • Food chemistry and nutrition
  • Food microbiology and safety
  • Food processing and preservation technologies
  • Value-addition and agro-industrial product development
  • Quality assurance, instrumentation and food analytics
  • Packaging, shelf-life and supply-chain management
  • Nutrition and public health in food systems

Students also engage in practical laboratory training, field visits, internships and final-year projects that bridge theory into practice.

Graduates of the BSc (Hons) in Food Science & Technology will be prepared for roles including:

  • Food Technologist or Process Technologist in food-processing enterprises
  • Quality Control / Quality Assurance Specialist in manufacturing or regulatory agencies
  • Food Safety Officer or Inspector in public health or food-safety bodies
  • Product Development Scientist for value-added food products
  • Nutrition and Food-Systems Specialist in NGOs, international agencies or community programmes

Admission Requirements & How to Apply

Undergraduate Admission RequirementsApplicants for the BSc (Hons) in Food Science & Technology must meet the following:

  • Completion of the South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Education (SSCSE) or equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Minimum passes in English, Mathematics, and at least one science subject (preferably Biology, Chemistry or Food Science).
  • Strong academic performance in science and mathematics is preferred.
  • International applicants must present equivalent qualifications recognised by the University; translations into English may be required.
