Welcome

The Department of Environmental Science at the University of Juba is dedicated to educating and empowering the next generation of environmental professionals for South Sudan and the broader East African region. We prepare our students with the scientific knowledge, technical skills and ethical mindset required to address environmental challenges—from ecosystem management and pollution control to sustainable development and climate resilience.

Our Mission

To deliver high-quality undergraduate education, undertake applied research, and engage communities in promoting environmental awareness, sustainable resource management, and improved ecosystem health.

Our Vision

To become a premier centre of excellence in teaching, research and service in environmental science—championing sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and healthy environments for all.

  • Excellence – in teaching, research and outreach.
  • Sustainability – promoting practices that meet present needs without compromising future generations.
  • Responsibility – ethical engagement with environment and society.
  • Innovation – adopting modern tools and approaches (e.g., GIS, remote sensing, environment monitoring).
  • Community Engagement – partnering with stakeholders, government, NGOs and local populations to effect real change.

Academic Programmes

We offer a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Science (5 years) as part of the school’s suite of programmes. This programme equips students with solid foundations in environmental chemistry, biology, geomorphology, GIS, remote sensing, environmental impact assessment, natural resources management, climate change adaptation, and field-practical skills.

Why Study with Us?

A curriculum tailored to the unique environmental and natural-resource context of South Sudan and neighbouring regions.

  • Field work and hands-on training embedded in the programme: environmental monitoring, water & soil sampling, GIS mapping, conservation practices.
  • Strong multidisciplinary integration via the School of Natural Resources & Environmental Studies—our students interact with related domains like wildlife, agriculture, geology, and mining.
  • Opportunities to engage in applied research and community outreach addressing pressing local issues: land degradation, water scarcity, climate change, biodiversity loss.
  • Graduates well prepared for roles in government agencies, environmental consultancies, NGOs, research institutions, and international development organisations.
