Welcome

The Department of Geology & Mining is committed to educating a new generation of earth-science professionals capable of exploring, managing and sustainably exploiting South Sudan’s rich geology. We combine rigorous scientific instruction with field-based training to prepare students for careers in mineral exploration, hydrogeology, environmental geology, mining operations and natural-resource policy.

Our Mission

To provide high-quality undergraduate education, conduct applied research, and engage communities and industry in order to advance geological knowledge, mineral and hydro-resource development, environmental protection and sustainable mining practices.

Our Vision

To become a regional centre of excellence in teaching, research and service in geology and mining—leading innovation in mineral exploration, responsible resource development and earth-science education for South Sudan and beyond.

Core Values

  • Excellence – in teaching, research and service.
  • Sustainability – promoting geological and mining practices that safeguard environments and future generations.
  • Innovation – adopting modern tools (such as GIS, remote sensing, geophysics) and methods for resource discovery and monitoring.
  • Integrity – ethical engagement with communities, industry and environment.
  • Community Engagement – working in partnership with local, regional and global stakeholders to translate geology and mining knowledge into practical benefits.

Academic Programme

The Department offers the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology & Mining (5-year programme) as one of the core degrees in the School of Natural Resources & Environmental Studies. This programme blends foundational coursework (such as mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, mining geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, GIS and resource economics) with extensive field work, laboratory experience and industry internships.

Why Study with Us?

  • A curriculum designed to meet the geological, mineral- and hydro-resource development challenges of South Sudan and the East African region.
  • Hands-on learning through field mapping, rock and mineral labs, geophysical surveys and mining site visits.
  • Access to interdisciplinary links across the School of Natural Resources & Environmental Studies—allowing integration with environment, agriculture, wildlife and water resources.
  • Opportunities to work with industry, government agencies and NGOs in resource exploration, environmental monitoring, mining policy and natural-resource management.
  • Graduates well-placed to pursue careers in mineral exploration companies, mining operations, hydrogeology consultancies, government agencies, academic & research institutions.

Research & Community Outreach

Our department actively engages in applied research and community outreach in areas such as:

  • Mineral and solid-resource exploration, mapping and evaluation.
  • Hydrogeology and groundwater resource investigation (e.g., resistivity surveys in Central Equatoria).
  • Environmental geology and the impacts of mining/heavy-industry on ecosystems.
  • Structural geology, tectonics and natural hazard assessment (South Sudan lies near major shear zones).
  • Use of GIS, remote sensing and geophysical methods to monitor resources, hazards and land-use change.
  • Engagement with industry, government and local communities to ensure resource-development benefits are sustainable and socially responsible.

Careers & Opportunities

Graduates from the BSc (Hons) in Geology & Mining are well-positioned for professional roles such as:

  • Mineral Exploration Geologist
  • Mining Operations Specialist or Mine Engineer
  • Hydrogeologist or Ground-Water Consultant
  • Environmental Geologist or Geotechnical Analyst
  • GIS/Remote-Sensing Specialist in Resource Monitoring
  • Research Assistant or Postgraduate Student in Earth Sciences
  • Natural-Resource Policy Advisor or Government SpecialistOur alumni may find opportunities in mining companies, consultancy firms, government ministries, environmental agencies, research centres and international development organisations.
